Reflective Narrative: This course meets the MLO 1.1 and 1.2: Japanese Language and Communication. In this course we learned different techniques used in the translation and interpreting professions. The first half of the semester we looked at our text book, in it we learned the different techniques and applied them. We did a lot of site translations and used the techniques we learned in class. The course was mainly taught in Japanese, which gave us the opportunity to continue to improve our Japanese language skills. We did a lot of activities that allowed us to practice translating and interpreting Japanese to English and English to Japanese as well. We looked at newspapers in both Japanese and English and used them as our translation practice in class. For one of our final projects we did a presentation on three pictures from a newspaper and translated them to Japanese.Through our interpreting and translation practice it allowed us to look at the structures of the Japanese language and how to appropriately translate it to English. What I learned in this course that I think is important is more Japanese grammar as well as a lot of new vocabulary. I hope to be a translator in the future, so this course was very useful for me and I hope to be able to continue practicing translating and eventually get a permanent translation job in the future.
