1.1 Students are able to communicate effectively in Japanese in three modes: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational; and in a culturally appropriate manner in a variety of social and professional settings and circumstances at the Intermediate-High level of language proficiency, according to the ACTFL Guidelines.

Reflective Narrative: The classes that I took to meet this MLO were really helpful in a variety of ways. One of the classes that I feel helped. me a lot with meeting MLO 1.1 is Japanese 302, History of Japan. This class was taught completely in Japanese using a Japanese history written in complete Japanese. There were even times in the book where they would use old language, so I was able to learn more types of Japanese language by reading the book. During this class we were expected to read the textbook ourselves at home and come prepared to read in class and answer questions. This helped me gain interpretive skills as well as presentational skills. In this class we also did a presentation in Japanese about a period of Japanese history, so I got to explore and research the history of Japan in more depth.
Another class I took to meet MLO 1.2 was Japanese 304, Intro Translation and Interpretation. This class really helped me gain more insight into the linguistics and phonetics of the Japanese language through learning how to translate to and from English. We had to analyze the differences between English and Japanese in this class in order to translate effectively. During class we looked at various news articles and translated them sometimes on the spot.
