Course Description: This course explores post WWII Japanese music, literature, artistic media, and hi-tech products. Investigates social themes ranging from post-holocaust Japanese hedonism to childhood fantasies by looking at Manga comic books, Animation, and popular music, as well as fashion and style, popular technology, consumerism, and environmental issues. Explores the evolution of pop culture and its impact on society. Taught in English.
Reflective Narrative: This course meets MLO 2 and 4: Japanese Culture and Research & Technology. In this class we looked at Japan after the Edo period and how the society evolved. We looked at different aspects of Japanese pop-culture through our books and article readings. We looked at various aspects such as, manga, anime, music, and dramas. We also did a final research paper and final presentation based on our research. During our classes we looked at many aspects of Japanese culture and were able to compare it to our culture and gain a better understanding of Japanese society that way as well. We looked at how Japanese culture has become widely known and how that has shaped Japan today and led it to becoming one of the leading economies. By doing our final research presentation and paper we were able to continue to analyze Japanese culture as well as continue to develop our researching skills.
